The Congregation of the Sisters of Charity (CSC) is a religious congregation for women in the status of Pontifical Right in the Syro Malabar Catholic Church which received the patrimony of faith from St. Thomas the Apostle. It was founded on 21st November 1944 by the Venerable Fr. Augustin John Ukken (1880- 1956) at Chowannur in the Syro-Malabar Archdiocese of Trichur. Since it’s inception CSC has flourished in its missions to all the marginalized by kindling the hearts of many with the fire of Love. In 1995 the Congregation was raised to the status of Pontifical Right. Presently it has three provinces, spread in various Dioceses in India and Abroad.
The Founder’s constant reminder to the Sisters was, “Your task is to love. Let nobody surpass you in love.” Drawing inspiration from the Founder Father and the Patroness of The Congregation St .Therese of Child Jesus, the members of this congregation endeavour to nurture a culture of Love. The charism of the Congregation is designed after the vision of the Founder, whose heart was moved with compassion and kindness for the poor. The Sisters in their daily apostolic activities identify themselves with the Crucified Christ and share His compassionate love with the poor and needy for their integral liberation.
The apostolates of CSC include evangelization through various means such as , media, health care, value education, family welfare, vocational training, care and development of differently abled, elderly, destitute, marginalized, prisoners, etc. The missionary zeal of the Founder is the source and motivation for all its members. The Sisters constantly strive to enliven the vision of the Founder through their own sanctification and services to the people of God and thereby participating in the building of His Kingdom.
